Abrégé
A file format that includes a constant section and a varying section. The constant section provides a referencing scheme that references the various components that comprise the scene, as well as a listing of attributes of the scene that are modifiable. Within the same file format, the varying section provides an overriding mechanism to modify the attributes that are available to be modified. Accordingly, the disclosed file format can access cached animated geometry directly and/or aggregate other files via the aforementioned referencing and sparse override semantics. This allows the same set of inspection, manipulation, and rendering tools to be used throughout the rendering pipeline, from asset creation to final rendering.

Abrégé
A method for a computer system includes determining a plurality of illumination modes associated with a plurality of scene descriptors, wherein the plurality of scene descriptors includes a first scene descriptor and a second scene descriptor, determining a first plurality of weights, wherein each weight from the first plurality of weights is associated with an illumination mode from the plurality of illumination modes, determining illumination data associated with the first scene descriptor in response to the first plurality of weights and in response to the plurality of illumination modes, determining a second plurality of weights, wherein each weight from the second plurality of weights is associated with an illumination mode from the plurality of illumination modes, and determining illumination data associated with the second scene descriptor in response to the second plurality of weights and in response to the plurality of illumination modes.

Abrégé
A method for rendering a frame of animation comprises retrieving scene descriptor data (220)associated with the frame of animation, wherein the scene descriptor data specifies at least one object , wherein the object is associated with a reference to a first representation of the object(230), wherein the first representation of the object is associated with a first rendering option(210), receiving a selection of the first rendering option )or a second rendering option (240). loading the first representation of the object into computer memory when the selection is of the first rendering option(250), and rendering the object for the frame of animation using the first representation of the object when the selection is of the first rendering option, wherein the first representation of the object is not loaded into computer memory when the selection is of the second rendering option(260).
