A system and method for volume rendering a light field, wherein the light field data is subjected to a layering scheme introducing a partitioning of the hogels into subsets. Each subset corresponding to a sub-volume of the layer volume, corresponds to the sub-region of the layer. Novel partitioning of the data combined with an efficient local memory caching technique, plenoptic downsampling strategies to reduce memory bandwidth requirements and volume rendering algorithm to produce a rendered light field image. A reduction in the total number of samples required can be obtained while still maintaining the quality of the resulting image. A method is also provided to order memory accesses aligned with ray calculations in order to maximize access coherency. Real-time layered scene decomposition can be combined with surface rendering method to create a hybrid real-time rendering method that supports rendering of scenes containing superimposed volumes and surfaces.
A multiplexed light field projector device and a multiplexed light field display to output a light field image is described. The projector has a projector base with a projection optical system configured to output light rays to form a projected image, a collimating optical system configured for collimation of the projected image light rays to form a second projected image, which is directed to a display optical system to produce a light field image. Light field projector devices or alternative projector devices may be used individually or in combination with one or more other projectors which can be arranged to form a multiplexed direct projection light field display. The arrangement of projector devices may have an individual or shared display optical system.
A system and methods for a CODEC driving a real-time light field display for multi-dimensional video streaming, interactive gaming and other light field display applications is provided applying a layered scene decomposition strategy. Multi-dimensional scene data is divided into a plurality of data layers of increasing depths as the distance between a given layer and the display surface increases. Data layers which are sampled using an effective resolution function to determine a suitable sampling rate and rendered using hybrid rendering, such as perspective and oblique rendering, to encode light fields corresponding to each data layer. The resulting compressed, (layered) core representation of the multi-dimensional scene data is produced at predictable rates, reconstructed and merged at the light field display in real-time by applying view synthesis protocols, including edge adaptive interpolation, to reconstruct pixel arrays in stages (e.g. columns then rows) from reference elemental images.

A method for light field rendering of a 3D scene data. The rendering method comprises capturing a light field image at a retracted plane, parallel to the display plane, decoding a light field camera to produce a hogel camera for each hogel at the retraction plane to produce an integral image, and applying a pixel remapping technique to the pixels of the integral image for display on a light field display. The 3D scene is captured and remapped to adjust the perspective giving the illusion the image was taken at the display plane, allowing captured images to be displayed in both the inner frustum and outer frustum of a light field display, creating an immersive experience.

A direct projection light field display comprising an array of projectors for direct projection of a light field. The overall design and incorporation of additional optics achieve the optimal light distribution and small pixel size to produce a high definition, 3D display. The architecture of the direct projection light field display has low a brightness requirement for each projector, resulting in an increased projector density, decreased system, and a decreased power requirement, while producing a high-definition light field.
A sub-hogel configuration for a high-definition light field display that can be used in the design of optical device and three-dimensional light field display technology. Three-dimensional holographic pixels (hogels) composed of monochromatic sub-hogels and a designed metasurface act as a directional optical element for a light field display. The sub-hogel structure design and method is suited for an achromatic metasurface to provide directional pixels for multiple view light field colored displays.

A system and methods for a CODEC driving a real-time light field display for multi-dimensional video streaming, interactive gaming and other light field display applications is provided applying a layered scene decomposition strategy. Multi-dimensional scene data is divided into a plurality of data layers. One or more polygons representative of corresponding portions of objects in the scene are obtained for each layer and used to determine a view-independent representation. This view independent representation and data layers are sampled using a plenoptic sampling scheme and rendered using hybrid rendering to encode light fields corresponding to each data layer.

Layered scene decomposition CODEC with transparency
A system and methods for a CODEC driving a real-time light field display for multi-dimensional video streaming, interactive gaming and other light field display applications is provided applying a layered scene decomposition strategy. Multi-dimensional scene data including information on transparency of surfaces is divided into a plurality of data layers of increasing depths as the distance between a given layer and the display surface increases. Data layers are sampled using a plenoptic sampling scheme and rendered using hybrid rendering, such as perspective and oblique rendering, to encode light fields corresponding to each data layer.

LAYERED SCENE DECOMPOSITION CODEC SYSTEM AND METHODS
A system and methods for a CODEC driving a real-time light field display for multi-dimensional video streaming, interactive gaming and other light field display applications is provided applying a layered scene decomposition strategy. Multi-dimensional scene data is divided into a plurality of data layers of increasing depths as the distance between a given layer and the display surface increases. Data layers are sampled using a plenoptic sampling scheme and rendered using hybrid rendering, such as perspective and oblique rendering, to encode light fields corresponding to each data layer.

The present disclosure relates to a directional pixel for a high-angular resolution, wide field of view, multiple view display. The design teaches a directional pixel comprising a substrate, one or more pixel driving circuits, one or more nano- or micro-scale subpixels, and one or more directional optical guiding surfaces, wherein each of said one or more subpixels is comprised of a light emitting device emitting a light beam and an optical microcavity housing said light emitting device. The optical microcavity is comprised of a plurality of reflective surfaces to specifically manipulate and tune said light beam, wherein one or more of said reflective surfaces is a light propagating reflective surface which propagates said light beam out of said microcavity, and said light propagating reflective surface is connected to said one or more directional optical guiding surfaces to direct said light beam at a specific angle. A high-angular resolution, multiple-view light-field display is created by deploying a plurality of directional pixels into a directional pixel array system.
